By Geary M, a Virta patient

In 2010 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. I tried every diet and failed. My A1c and weight continued to get worse. I felt defeated, so I followed the doctor’s advice to try different meds. I tried every diabetic med on the market. The doctors told me that this was how you treat diabetes. Each medication made me ill. I couldn’t deal with them. I was miserable mentally and physically.

At least insulin worked. It allowed me to eat pies, cookies, cake, and ice cream. But there was always a need for more insulin. And I felt worse. Financially, it was a burden.

I kept trying every diet, but to no avail. I couldn’t stay on any diet because I knew that with insulin, I could eat sugar.

I joined Virta in July of 2017. I was most excited about the program because I could eat protein and fat. Second, I loved that there would be a health coach because I knew I couldn’t do it alone.

Since joining the Virta Treatment, my A1C is way down to 5.5 with over 50 lbs lost. All my blood tests are in range: cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc. All of the components of the treatment were important, but my health coach was the biggest cause of my success. The treatment works if you work with it.

The biggest change in my life has been how great I feel getting off the insulin needle and other diabetic meds. I don’t have to be a test subject for all those new meds coming on the market!

My day-to-day life has changed too: I can walk at the lake and do chores at home. I don’t have to hire people to do stuff that I should be able to do on my own. I’m doing housework, walking hills, and my stamina is off the charts. I still can’t sleep, and I still have pain, but much less.

Music has always been a huge part of my life—I am my guitar and my guitar is me. It’s a lot more fun now that I can carry my Super 400 guitar and amplifier.

I now can look forward to tomorrow. My life has changed: night and day. Before, I had no hope and no solutions. Today, I’m so happy. I have direction and a path to success.

I am so thankful that I found Virta!

  1. I really like this statement: “I couldn’t stay on any diet because I knew that with insulin, I could eat sugar.” This is so true for so many, myself included. And I think this is the greatest problem for those with type 2 diabetes taking medication or injecting insulin.

    Congrats Geary!

  2. I think I need a coach too!

My A1C went from 12.8 to 6.2 after 3 weeks of doing what the TED Talk said, no GPS, but I further added no dairy and no beans, starting March 3rd.

I’m no longer diabetic, but still HUGE!

I’ve not gained, but not lost weight either, however lost inches all over; does that count? I’m still 265 pounds @ 6′ 6″ tall. The only visible sign is my tummy has gone from basketball to flatish bulge.

I want to lose 50 pounds, like you did.

  7. So proud of you for realizing you can’t do it on your own and for getting yourself off the insulin. You can still make your favorite sweets with Pyure brand Stevia, I’d be happy to share recipes with you!
