If you’re choosing to follow a low carb lifestyle for diabetes reversal or other reasons, it can be hard to find substitutes for your favorite foods. Italian food can be high carb, but don’t worry—here are some delicious low carb alternatives you can try!

Because nutritional ketosis can lead to rapid decreases in blood sugar and blood pressure, Virta strongly recommends getting medical supervision before making any dietary changes if you are on medications for blood sugar or blood pressure. A physician can help you safely reduce your medications so that they don’t drive your blood sugar or blood pressure too low. Hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hypotensive (low blood pressure) episodes can be very dangerous.

Thanks for these recipes, they look great.

The mini eggplant pizza is listed at 7g carbs. How many slices is that? For every recipe in the lot it would be helpful if the serving size were made clearer.

The recipes look great, thanks for providing.

The recipe says it will make about 12 slices and each serving would be about 2 slices and the eggplant would be approximately 6″ long to make 12 – 1/2″ slices. And since it says there are 6 servings, that would be approximately 2 slices of 1/2″ thickness.

Yessss more of these low carb keto recipes please! I’m having a really difficult time finding tasty replacements that don’t only include meat (if I could be vegetarian keto, I would…but pple in my family still want meat in every meal)

Curious about the meatball recipe. It says to use ground beef along with 32 oz of sausage LINKS… and then to mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Wouldn’t it be more useful to use ground sausage as well? Or is there something special about this recipe, which features a sausage link inside of a meatball? 🙂

Good catch! We updated it to include sausage links with the casings removed or ground sausage.

Hi there, I tried the zucchini noodles with tomato sauce – after having had 6 months without noodles I can’t even describe how happy that made me.
I’ve got a question. Dr. Stephanie Estima writes in her Keto-blog about “resistant starches” (here:, like cold rice. What do you think about that, are “resistant starches” a real thing? Thanks, all the best!

    1. Virta Health

Hi Stefan, we agree, “zoodles” are an excellent alternative to noodles on a Keto diet! To answer your question regarding resistant starches, they are still high in carbohydrates and should be avoided if trying to stay within the guidelines of a well formulated ketogenic diet.
