Is it safe to do a ketogenic diet while breastfeeding?

While there are many anecdotes of women nursing while following a ketogenic diet, and there is of course the anthropological experience of successful hunting and herding cultures, there are no published large prospective studies demonstrating safety and effectiveness of this practice. And due to ethical restrictions on human research, it is unlikely that such a study will be performed soon.
