In 2012 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I didn’t really understand the diagnosis at the time; I didn’t have any symptoms, only elevated A1c and fasting blood sugars.  So I started on Metformin, and my A1c improved. I basically went back to eating an unhealthy diet since my lab numbers were okay with medication. Well, that is crazy thinking! There just came a day when I thought: “If I want to live a healthy, long life I better start taking care of my body.”

Over the last few years, I have generally just not felt well. I was fatigued and overweight. My arthritis was getting worse. I did not like the person I saw in the mirror. I tried to lose weight through calorie restriction and exercise, but nothing worked.  I was now taking more medication: Januvia, Trazodone, and Crestor. Though they weren’t a financial burden because I got them through my employer’s wellness center, I didn’t care for some of the side effects of the medications, especially joint pain.

I first heard about Virta in an email from our human resources director at Tippecanoe County Government, where I work. (They cover the cost of Virta.) I joined on April 23, 2018.  I have since lost 22 pounds in 8 weeks, and my glucose levels have improved. I started improving within days, and I’ve been improving ever since. I have stopped my Januvia and I’m excited to get my blood work done and see if my A1C has gone down.

Lisa, before and after 8 weeks on Virta

Co-workers and friends acknowledge all the weight I have lost. My husband sees a change in my energy level and attitude. My life no longer revolves around what bakery I’m going to stop at for a donut! I do not crave all the junk I was eating before starting Virta and therefore feel 100% better. I thoroughly enjoy trying new Virta-friendly recipes. And I am saving money from not eating out all of the time!

I have increased energy, I’m focused on my work, and I sleep better at night. I can now sleep on my stomach! My fingers have been swollen from arthritis for years but the swelling is down, and my pain level has decreased. My vision has also improved. My body just feels better overall— less inflammation and pain, no mood swings, and more energy since I am not carrying around extra weight.

The Virta treatment is all-encompassing: they give you all the tools to succeed. Their health coaches are always available, and the Virta Community is also a great help. Nothing is left to chance, except your attitude and willingness to try something new!
