Can I reverse diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy, or retinopathy with a ketogenic diet?

By Dr. Stephen Phinney and the Virta Team

We have many anecdotes of reversal of neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy in people with T2D following a well-formulated ketogenic diet but there are not objective data (ie, published peer-reviewed studies) to provide evidence that this is true.

My sister is 56. She has had diabetes for a long time. Kidney disease Stage 4. She had sleeve surgery a year ago. She’s lost a lot of weight, but she continues to decline. Her kidney function and blood pressure continue to get worse. She struggles with eating and keeping things down. She can’t keep down supplements. I feel like she is malnourished. Getting many doctors on board to cross consult seems impossible. I feel the sleeve was a mistake, even though she was in the hospital 3-4 times a year because of the kidneys, diabetes, then flu and pneumonia. On and on. She been sent recently to PD dialysis training/educational appt (I went with her). If her numbers don’t get better, she will have to do this. I just don’t know if she is a candidate for you clinic. listening to the PD information, and explanation the nephons are dead, etc., I asked why they don’t put her on PD now to help her kidney eliminate the toxins. Can’t be good hanging in the system. 2 eye surgeries now. Edema is affecting her “thinking”. Can she be helped thru your clinic?

Hi Evie, thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept patients with stage 4 kidney disease. At the root of our decisions is the fact that we can never compromise patient safety and we are somewhat limited by the technology of remote monitoring. Some medical conditions, such as ongoing or recent cancer treatment, advanced kidney disease, or complex or recent cardiovascular events, create exclusions because coordinating remote care creates difficulties in delivering treatment.
